Though the current XF is a much better car with a lot of aluminium components in its structure, the Ingenium engines have had a few problems, notably with balancer shafts and timing chains. Jaguar switched from the 2,179cc belt-cam PSA/Ford engine in your car to its own Ingenium diesel and petrol engines from about 2015. Is this a good time to replace my car and is a petrol engine still worth considering? PM I don’t believe that Jaguar yet offers an electric or hybrid version and, in any event, I prefer a petrol or diesel model. I have been delighted with this car, but given its age and mileage I am now thinking about buying a new one exactly the same (or as near as possible). In 2014 I bought a new Jaguar XF 2.2 diesel saloon, now at 124,000 miles and running very well. The steering rack was bolted to the body bulkhead rather than to the suspension subframe and could break free. Something similar happened 20 years ago with the Vauxhall Cavalier, Daewoo Espero and Saab 900, all of which shared the same basic structure. However, in July 2019 the DVSA issued a statement: “The manufacturer has recognised the fault with the steering motor bolts breaking on Range Rover Evoque and Discovery Sport vehicles.” The DVSA then recommended that Land Rover conducted a voluntary recall to rectify those vehicles with aluminium bolts that could potentially fail. I agree, it should have been subject to a full-scale safety recall. The aluminium bolt corrosion issue first emerged in Canada. Three aluminium retaining bolts securing the power steering motor to the steering rack are corroding and fracturing, causing the power steering motor to fall off the rack and resulting in a sudden loss of steering with no prior warning to alert the driver. The affected vehicles are the Range Rover Evoque L538 (2011-2017) and the Land Rover Discovery Sport L550 (2015-2017). The defect resulted in recalls on these vehicles in Canada, but not the UK. I would like to draw attention to a manufacturing defect present in some Jaguar Land Rover vehicles, over which the manufacturer is ignoring requests for remedial action.
